Recruiting films

Your careers page isthe biggest culture opportunityyou’re not using.

Every future employee reads it before they ever meet you. Most companies fill it with pay, benefits and working conditions, then spend the interview judging culture fit for a culture the candidate has never seen. We help you lead with what you believe, so the right people arrive already knowing they belong.

Try this

Open your careers page in another tab.

Look at the first thing it offers. Most companies make the same universal claims of competitive pay, medical, dental and vision, a 401(k) match. Then leadership wonders why so many of the people they hire seem more attached to the paycheck than to the mission. It isn’t a mystery. The careers page made a promise, and the people who believed it came to collect.

Cover the logo and that page could belong to a bank, a hospital, a general contractor or a software company. Perks aren’t wrong to offer, and good people expect them, but they’re a promise any competitor can match by Friday. Meanwhile the thing that actually sets you apart, the mission and the people who carry it, waits until orientation, where it arrives in a binder after the decision to join was made for other reasons.

People deserve to know what they’re joining before they join it.

Then comes the interview

The careers page sold the perks. The interview asks whether they’re a culture fit. Most candidates are guessing, and so is the hiring manager.

Why Portlight

We know where the real story lives.

Portlight is a small team with decades of experience between us, and one skill we have practiced in very different rooms: getting people to talk openly, then finding the true story among many points of view. We have done it inside companies for twenty years, and we keep seeing the same thing. Leaders care deeply about the mission, their people would follow it, and somehow the two never meet until long after the hire. That true story, told by the people who live it, is the thing a careers page needs most.

Our clients range from the Fortune 50 to smaller companies whose work runs quietly through hundreds of industries. Company size isn’t the point. We gravitate toward industry leaders and disruptors, the companies whose work actually changes something.

The plan

It takes three steps and a few weeks.

Your part is a half day of conversation, one day of access, and a decision about where the films go first. We handle everything else.

1
Half day

Name what you believe.

We sit down with your leadership and hiring team to get specific about who you are trying to hire, why your best people stay, and what they say when a friend asks what it’s like to work there. Together we choose the hiring number these films should move.

2
Full day

Let your people say it.

We spend a day on site with the people who carry the mission. Real interviews and real work, with no actors and no scripts, so candidates hear the true version from someone they could actually end up working beside.

3
Three weeks

Lead with it.

You receive three finished films, each 60 to 90 seconds and built around one reason a person would want to work for you. They go to the top of your careers page, ahead of the benefits list, where they belong.

The careers page comes first. The same films keep working after: Careers pageJob postingsLinkedInJob fairsOffer letters
What changes

The right people start showing up already believing.

Leading with perksLeading with the mission
BeforeCandidates apply because the salary range looked right.AfterCandidates apply because someone on your team explained why they stay.
BeforeInterviews spend twenty minutes explaining what the company does.AfterInterviews start with the candidate telling you why the work matters to them.

BeforeGood people leave for a slightly better package.AfterPeople who joined for a reason have a reason to stay.

The cost of waiting.

Every month the careers page leads with perks, it quietly filters for people who came for perks. None of them did anything wrong. They answered the invitation they were given, and they will keep doing exactly that until a better package comes along. Changing who you attract is the cheapest culture work a company will ever do, because it happens before anyone is hired.

The front door, not the whole house

If your people only seem to care about the paycheck, it may be because nobody gave them anything else to believe in.

Crew Story fixes the first moment, the one where a candidate decides what kind of company you are. It doesn’t examine what happens after they walk in. When you sit across from people and ask why they stay, though, they tell you, and sometimes what they say is less a recruiting message than a finding.
